It would take a yeoman's effort to top the 1980 indie-pop classic "Getting Nowhere Fast" from Girls At Our Best! In 1987, the Wedding Present turned up the volume and intensity, creating quite an argument about which group had the better version. I'm not sure that debate will ever be settled.
In the meantime, a couple of years ago, Brighton band the Fireworks dared to enter the fray, releasing 300 copies of the song on a playable single-sided flexi postcard. Now that's nerve! I was lucky enough to happen across a copy today, and I was as impressed with it as last year's debut album, 'Switch Me On,' and this year's 10", 'Black & Blue.' It appears their single of 'Getting Nowhere Fast' is sold out now, but you can still buy it as a download for about a buck. Highly recommended. What's your favorite version?

Have to go with Girls At Our Best! It takes me back to a certain time when everything seemed possible. In fact a friend gave me the single for my 17th birthday.
Weddoes. But then, I'm probably being biased...
A very creditable stab by The Fireworks, though lagging a little behind the others, upon which I'll confer an honourable dead-heat status. A terrific song and two fantastic performances. My Girls At Our Best collection was yet another example of a rash sale when times were particularly hard. Why didn't I just go hungry?
Thanks for weighing in, fellas. I love the Weddoes' version, but this is GAOB's finest moment, and that weighs into it for me. I also knew only of GOAB's version for many many years, and that probably has some significance in my liking it better. As for the Fireworks, Swede said it best. Good in its own right but not quite at the same level as the other two. Oh, and Swede, I have nothing but empathy. We all have regrets about sell offs in tough times.
I find myself liking this more than the Wedding Present's version. Something surely wrong there!
Good of you stop by, George. Since I know you are one of Gedge's disciples, that was a heap of praise.
TWP. Well for today anyway. I reserve the right to change my mind tomorrow
