As a followup to Cherry Red's excellent reissued and expanded 'C86' box set, the label has posed a great question: What songs would have made NME's long list had there been a 'C87' compilation? NME may not have released such a thing, but Cherry Red will. They have farmed the UK's fertile indie field from mid-1986 through 1987 to produce a three-CD set tentatively scheduled for a late May or early June release. Not quite all of the clearances are in place, but this is the expected tracklist of 'C87.' The second disc, in particular, should have you giddy.

To whet your appetite, here is my personal favorite of the lot. In keeping with my pledge to go all vinyl in 2016, here is "I Could Be in Heaven," transferred from the 7" above moments ago. This is one of my most treasured records. I melt every time I hear that little scream at the end. Flatmates forever! I would love to hear if you think anyone was overlooked on this 75-song collection.

A very fine selection, Brian, and worth purchasing for the inclusion of A-26 alone, I would think!! I just hope Cherry Red won't rip us off with the Price, I mean after all 90% of the stuff should be known to everyone anyway, so they'd better be not too greedy ...
The Pastels are missing, they released 'Up For A Bit' in '87, which was good throughout! The Perfect Disaster should be included with 'The Night Belongs To Charlie'. Friends Of The Family - 'Rotten To The Core', which I think was from 1987 and if it was, it is a definitive 'must' here! The Sugarcubes' 'Birthday', of course , although I assume this can't be included 'cos of record contract reasons ..
All in all they did a fabulous Job though, no doubt about that!

Fabulous indeed. I am very pleased to se Red Snake on there, a brilliant track, brilliant, and one that wil be pounding from the B&Ws when this is released.
Well I will admit I don't know more than half the tracks. Where have I been? Stuck in Freedy Johnston land perhaps. However because this comes so highly recommended already from sources I totally trust AND I have a birthday coming up…… I may have to drop some not-so-subtle hints at home.
And I LOVE the featured track!! Damn! Two plays and I have such an ear worm! Bah bah bah bah bah bahhh. Makes me wanna continue and play my beloved Buzzcock records too!
Great. Something else to get obsessed about. Ha! Onward!!
I was with you in Freedy JohnSton land during this period Kevinpat.Like you thanks to Brian and others I am discovering and enjoying much of this stuff for the first time
there's a few in C87 that were 'hijacked' by Bob Stanley for CD86 as featured at great length last year over by!!
Who is missing?
Close Lobsters - Foxheads Stalk This Land was an 87 LP
The Weather Prophets - Mayflower LP (flawed as it is) was 87
THere will be others!!!!!
It's still a cracking compilation mind you
Wow! This is one to get. C86 casts a long shadow and there are a number of bands that missed the boat that are deservedly here.
Hi fellas. Fantastic omissions. Nothing from Foxheads is glaring. There are other C86 acts here. So that can't be the reason for overlooking Close Lobsters or Pastels, for that matter. I'll give them a pass on Sugarcubes because of geography. Great song though. Hearing Birthday for the first time was a religious experience. Two of the best singles from the Weather Prophets are Almost Prayed and Naked as the Day You Were Born, and they were both from the second half of '86 and by Cherry Red's rules could have been included. My vote is for Bubblegum Splash! Something from the Splashdown EP. Subway is fairly well represented. So, I won't complain too much. Using Freedy here doesn't quite work by my calendar, but I get what you boys are saying and like the sentiment. May need to pull out Can You Fly after the kids go to bed tonight. And as Echorich says, it's just nice to get some of these more obscure songs out there again. I know there are some here I don't have at all.
