And probably not just a few American Generations, either - I have lovely happy memories of watching the Mary Tyler-Moore Show which was screened over here in the early '70s (also followed by Rhoda). I had a little girl-crush on her, with her fantastic smile and long dark hair, wanted her to be my auntie, neighbour, big sister...just loved her. I watched a clip of the opening credits last night, all these years later, and felt that same little rush of joy. Reading about her real-life sorrows since the news came in was also quite a revelation (as was the Husker Du version, I hadn't heard that before).
C and Echorich, I have similar memories about her show and the Dick Van Dyke show. I still catch them from time to time, even though I have seen every episode many times. I just saw Moore in a movie last week called Change of Habit. Get this: She was a nun in training working at a clinic run by a doctor in the inner city... played by Elvis Presley! I couldn't make this up. Came out in '69. She wasn't in another movie until Ordinary People more than a decade later. Now that was a performance.
Brian, Change of Habit is the ONLY Elvis movie I can stomach...A for Ordinary People, that is a movie reflecting growing up in our generation. I had friends who's family dynamic was just like that - repressed feelings, no understanding of depression or teenager needs. It hit home.
Been singing this to myself since this afternoon... THIS is someone who was like a best friend/favorite neighbor to a few American Generations!
